Objective

An expanded and effectively managed terrestrial protected area network established based on national and international biodiversity priorities

Milestones – 2014-2019

  1. Two new Protected Areas formally established and gazetted by Government with NatureFiji-MareqetiViti support;
  2. NatureFiji-MareqetiViti continues to assist Government’s NBSAP reviews of Protected Area identification, legislation and management priorities;
  3. Innovative mechanisms for forest protection identified, advocated and in the process of deployment;
  4. Develop mechanisms and partnerships for the sustainable use and protection of rivers;
  5. Savura Education & Amenity Park, subject to feasibility study findings;
  6. Wainikavika National Park, subject to Government approval;
  7. Explore the possibility of the establishment of field research stations with site-support groups;
  8. Empowering local communities to value and manage priority biodiversity sites;
  9. NatureFiji-MareqetiViti to review its capacity and the potential for it to become a protected area owner and/or manager and determine an appropriate policy.
