Notice of Funding Opportunity
The Improving and Strengthening Leadership for Nature-based Development (ISLAND) Program – an initiative implemented by NatureFiji-MareqetiViti (NFMV) in collaboration with U.S. Forest Service International Programs – is accepting proposals from Pacific-based non-profit organizations for projects in the following thematic areas: i) Terrestrial and Mangrove Forest Restoration ii) Community-Based Forest Management, Agroforestry and Alternative Livelihoods ii) Biodiversity Conservation
Project proposal budgets can be up to $40,000 USD for project implementation and monitoring of outcomes and an additional $10,000 USD for travel.
Background: Pacific Island forests and mangroves are an important source of food, fiber, and fuel necessary for human survival. These ecosystems also provide critical habitat for unique assemblages of flora and fauna that are only found in the region. These forests are vulnerable to climate change impacts and these impacts are already being experienced from sea level rise, increased wildfires, shifts in rainfall patterns, and increased extreme weather events such as tropical cyclones or droughts. As the Pacific Island Countries (PICs) struggle with the natural hazards, they continue to pose a threat to the countries’ sustainable growth and economic development. These impacts are further compounded by growing rates of deforestation and forest degradation from agricultural and aquaculture conversion, infrastructure development, unsustainable logging, natural hazards and increased spread of invasive species. The independent and interactive effects of these impacts have decreased the provision of ecosystems goods and services from forested ecosystems and increased forest carbon emissions. Effective management of ecosystems that are resilient to these stressors must include the integration of the human populations that utilize them if forests are to continue to provide goods and services. This community-based management can be achieved through collaborative workshops, trainings, dialogue and research that can all lead to increased conservation and restoration of these forests. The Improving and Strengthening Leadership for Nature-based Development (ISLAND) program is a cooperation between NatureFiji-MareqetiViti (NFMV) and U.S. Forest Service International Programs and aims to improve management of Pacific Island Forests, increase the resilience to various stressors, and overall improve human livelihoods across the Pacific.
Eligible Applicants: NFMV welcomes applications from Pacific-based non-profit organizations, tertiary academic institutions, grassroot or community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, and civil society organizations. All projects must be implemented in a Pacific Island Country.
