The 2nd landed Fiji Petrel of the year flies off safely.
There were no Fiji Petrel landings in 2008 but there have been 2 already in 2009.
This morning Amania Taukei of Lovo village who has been spearheading the NFMV-National Trust project on the island, released the bird and it flew away strongly.
This is a great result, especially after the disappointment of the the first landed Fiji Petrel in January.
This bird was too weak to fly off though the villagers at Levukaigau used the methods shown on the posters which NFMV distributed last year.
The specimen is now preserved in Suva, the world’s fourth Fiji Petrel specimen.
