——————————————

World Migratory Birds Day is an annual awareness-raising event that highlights the incredible journey of migratory birds and the need for their conservation. This year’s theme, “Protect Insects, Protect Birds,” emphasised the importance of insects for birds and highlights the concerns related to the decreasing populations of insects.

Fiji is an important stopover for several migratory bird species, including the wandering tattler (Tringa incana), the Pacific golden plover (Pluvialis fulva), and the great frigatebird (Fregata minor). These migratory shorebirds escape the cold winters of the Arctic and travel to the Pacific to feed and prepare for the breeding season.

October 12th marked World Migratory Bird Day. To commemorate this day, nature lovers and bird enthusiasts are invited to join the High Commission of Malaysia in Suva, Republic of Fiji, BirdLife International, and NatureFiji-MareqetiViti at the Nasese Foreshore on Saturday, 02 November 2024, for a special bird count event. We hope you can make it!
