Birds in Fiji’s Forests: Kulawai

Birds in Fiji’s Forests: Kulawai

KULAWAI – RED-THROATED LORIKEET

The Kulawai, or Red-throated Lorikeet (Charmosyna amabilis), is critically endangered—there have been no confirmed sightings of the bird since 1993. It may be extinct, but in fact, ornithologists may not have been looking for it in the best places. The Nadarivatu-Monasavu area (where the Kulawai was best known) has had a significant increase in development and human presence since 1965, which may have had a direct impact on the bird. We believe the best chance to find a Kulawai today is in the forests of Taveuni, where there have been less changes over the past 50 years than in the forests of Viti Levu. NatureFiji-MareqetiViti is now spearheading a campaign to find the Kulawai. Find out how you can be a part of this effort at…………

“Forests and Biodiversity – Too precious to lose!” is the theme of the International Day of Forests today, March 21. For the past two weeks, we have been sharing information about a different bird highlighted in our special edition playing cards. We hope you have enjoyed learning more about the precious diversity you can find right here in our Fijian forests! #IntlForestDay #IDOF2020
